Why Not To Send Automated Direct Messages To Your Twitter Followers

Sending automated Twitter Direct Messages is an active practice I observe these days. Finding it a good marketing technique, people look for Twitter tools to set automated DM for your new profile followers. But this practice of automated Direct messaging is not good.

When your new follower receives an automated DM from you, you are exactly spamming him. Yes, you are just flooding his DM inbox. No one really replies to those messages, and many even hardly check it out. Many people even find it annoying and they might unfollow you right away.  Even a courtesy message like “Thanks for following…”, or “We’re going to have good times together” are just too annoying.

Never ever send self introduction messages, like “Hi, I’m ….”, or “Thanks for following, check out me/my profile.” The follower actually knows you, and that is why he is following you. You don’t have to mention a self-promotion stuff with your blog links etc.

Sending automated direct messages breaks up your Twitter karma and you tend to lose followers. Send them something which can be useful for them as a welcome call, like some free e-book link, follow network, invites etc. You might refer about your another Twitter account which can be useful for the follower, like @GuyKawasaki does. Don’t message them your Sponsored Tweets affiliate links or anything which they might not like.

So what do you think? Is Auto DM a good practice or a bad one?

Auto DM is obnoxious. I absolutely detest it. I won’t unfollow based on a single auto-DM, but I’m not liking it either. More than one aut0-DM and I do unfollow that account.

  11. Great post Rishi !! I am agreed with you even I don’t like the concept of DM, it looks like spamming. I don’t have too much followers in twitter because of the fact that I don’t follow such accounts.
Btw, I like your way of writing.Keep up the good work :)

  12. Auto-DM is absolutely annoying – and really pointless. However, a relevant, hand written, DM to a new follower can go a long way to building a good relationship.

If I follow someone and they don’t follow back within a few days I will usually stop following them – unless their tweets are very noteworthy. However, if I follow someone and they send me a personal (not automated) DM I’m much more likely to continue following them.

    Human nature, I guess.
